So, here is another weird one on a Dolphin site. Actually, this time the weirdness doesn't have anything to do with the Dolphin software, amazingly.

One of my site sent me four alerts that someone was trying to access my include files directly on a Dolphin site. I have added code to the include files that sends me an email if anyone tries to access them. When I checked the access log I was surprised NOT to see the usual hacker attempt but discovered it was a BAD ROBOT.

38.104.58.118 - - [16/Aug/2008:20:34:45 -0500] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 403 2173 "-" "panscient.com"
38.104.58.118 - - [16/Aug/2008:20:34:45 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 403 2163 "-" "panscient.com"
38.104.58.118 - - [16/Aug/2008:20:34:46 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 403 2163 "-" "panscient.com"

Access Attempts:

From IP address : 38.104.58.118 on the file: /inc/admin_design.inc.php

From IP address : 38.104.58.118 on the file: /inc/design.inc.php

From IP address : 38.104.58.118 on the file: /inc/admin.inc.php

From IP address : 38.104.58.118 on the file: /inc/banners.inc.php

So, that got me thinking did they violate the robots.txt rule? Well, no. They didn't because I neglected to upload the robots.txt file. Okay so why are the Bad Robots if you didn't provide the required file?

I checked the whole access log for what they actually tried to index and the fact is they ONLY tried to index files in the /inc folder and to me that is a BAD ROBOT action, plain and simple. I am also pretty confident that if the Robots.txt file was in place, they would have ignored it anyway based on some searches I did for their reputation as a BAD ROBOT. Including a comment I found from their CEO
that claims total innocence, too many say they are bad boys down under!

Here is what he had to say:

Hey all, a friend just brought your post to my attention. I am the CEO of Panscient. If our bot is causing you trouble please let me know. You can also send an email to crawler@panscient.com. It will be read by a human.

We crawl for executive management profiles and other corporate information.

Our bot behaviour is explained on our FAQ: http://panscient.com/faq.htm.

The bot is throttled to request no more than one page per second per server, and programmed to obey robots.txt and robot meta tags, so if you are seeing any other behaviour it's a bug and we'd like to hear about it so we can fix it.

Thanks,

Jonathan Baxter

HA! My include files have not a freaking thing to do with "Executive Profiles" ... I have blocked them anyway ( :biglaugh: and I uploaded my robots.txt file :spinny: )!

Enjoy!

Need to upgrade from aeDating to Dolphin?

If you are currently running a heavily modified aeDating site (or not modified at all) and you think you want to upgrade to Dolphin but you don't want to "lose" the dating look and feel of your aeDating site, check out http://www.dating4divers.com. Until a few days ago, this site was a heavily modified aeDating site. It is now Dolphin 5.6.0005 (the last Dolphin release that still has a REAL dating site look and feel ) with all the mods upgraded and working. It is still clearly defined as a dating site and has a huge number of features that aeDating simply didn't have.

When I was doing this upgrade, I discovered to my surprise that some of the mods that I did were actually part of the Dolphin product so I didn't have to upgrade some of my hacks.

If you are seriously thinking of upgrading, I can same you plenty of $$$ and huge amount of aggravation. Work is professionally done and your satisfaction is completely guaranteed. The prep work takes three to four days depending on the number of profiles and images your members have stored. The actual site upgrade takes about 4 to 6 hours (ftp can be pretty slow sometimes) and I do it in the off hours of your sites timezone when your members are least likely to be online to cause as little inconvenience and service disruption as possible to your members.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Enjoy!

I have just upgraded this site to the lastest and greatest vBulletin and to my amazement, I got a new bogus member within a day of doing the upgrade. The amazement was not from getting the new member but that he successfully managed to evade all my anti forum spammer code!

Then I realized that I did the upgrade and didn't apply my hack to the new system. Actually I did the same thing jumping from 3.6.8 to 3.7.0. Just forgot to add that filter to the code. I guess I will have to stop hacking and actually build a vBulletin Product so that I don't keep having this surprise.

This particular freak :mask: from China (he uses a variety of different IP but for the most part they always seem to be in China as are the bogus email addresses that he uses) has attempted to register on my site nearly 300 times since January and my hack has successfully blocked him.

If you are still plagued with getting bogus registrations and PM spam from this character, contact me. I can help you shut him down, 100% success is hard to beat!

I have just completed work on doing an upgrade on a pretty heavily modified dating site that began like as an aeDating 3.xx site.

http://www.dating4divers.com is a free service in transition like many niche dating sites on the web today.

The conversion took about two days actually including the database work. The previous version was a hacked 4.1IQ and contained many custom mods and tweaks that were not part of any aeDating offering, especially in reporting and administrative functions, like banning badguys and IP collection and lookups as well as USPS zipcode lookups.

For a totally free service, this site has a lot of cool features including most of the ones that come stock with the Dolphin 5.6.0005 release ( as you may recall this is the last version of Dolphin that still looks like a Dating Site). With a completely custom template, it is a pretty good looking package.

Check it out! If you are running aeDating software whether or not it has been modified and think you want to upgrade your site to Dolphin. Send me a PM or email to the allaboutdating sites webmaster account.

Have Fun!

If you are interested in getting your vBulletin powered forum fully customized and looking good, you have to choose a provider that KNOWS the turf! As you can see from this site, it is definitely not your average vBulletin Forum site. I have worked and reworked it pretty extensively to get "just" the right look, feel and usability for the demographic it is designed to serve.

The site is also optimized to be search engine friendly, user friendly and loaded with a huge number of social networking features (thanks to vBulletin 3.7.0 and 3.7.1). Many of operational features that are not obvious, some of which run transparently, make life as a site administrator a lot more pleasant. You will well appreciate these features in your day to day site operation.

I have customized many of the graphics on this site including the flash header graphic. Although the initial style is publicly available, I have rearranged a fair amount of it to make it more estetically pleasing and user friendly.

My suggestions, usability advice and artistic consulting is provided at no cost.

If you are looking to build a site like this one and have no idea where to start. I can help you.

If you are looking for custom development, installation, integration and support services for vBulletin, vBulletin Customizations, Style upgrades, vBulletin peripherals, you have come to the right place!

My rates are extremely competitive and the work I do speaks for itself. This site is a symphony of technologies and in addition to being the lastest and greatest vbulletin available, under the hood, it utilizes some of the latest web technologies available to enhance your member experience while providing you with a huge number of features to make your site wildly successful. All it needs is little marketing, the right niche topic and some TLC and your are THERE!

Send me a PM if you are thinking about getting your very own vBulletin site up and running.

Among other things, this site has a core of vbulletin, vbportal, vblog, a directory service, vbseo sitemap and much more. It us running a custom style and many user friendly enhancements. Flashchat and Shoutbox are also installed on this site.

I think Scammers need and RICHLY deserver Public Recognition. I got this one in my email today and decided to do a little analysis on it to expose the freak for what he is, a bandit, liar and scammer.

Although, this is most certainly a phishing expedition looking for a target to exploit, it is more characteristic of a "Spanish Prisoner" scam. The "Link" or links that you typically find in the "Bank Notices" and "PayPal" scams are glaringly missing from this exploit. The scammer is using a "Private" yahoo email address to lure the target into the trap instead.

Normally, you would expect to see a counterfeit site that requested a login verification. This scam technique does not deploy such a mechanism therefore tracking this badguy would be next to impossible without the cooperation of the free email vendor, unfortunately.

Here is the email with slightly sanitized header, though only MY info has been slightly modified for security purposes but the spammer's information stuff is completely intact.
FROM MR PATRICK CHAN.
Bank of China (Hong Kong)
SUNCHINE CITY BRANCH,
Shop 16, Block C&D,
Sunshine City, Ma on Shan
New Territories, Hong Kong.
(Email :) patchna_mail@yahoo.com.hk

Good Day,

It is understandable that you might be a little bit apprehensive because
you do not know me but I have a lucrative business proposal of mutual
interest to share with you.

Let me start by introducing myself. I am Mr.Patrick Chan. Executive
Director and Chief Financial Officer) of the Hang Seng Bank Ltd.Sunshine
City Branch, Shop 16, Blocks C & D, Sunshine City, Ma On Shan, New
Territories, Hong Kong. I have an obscured Business suggestion for you.

In October, 2002, my late client Ghazi Musa Hassan, Iraqi Crude oil
merchant made a numbered fixed deposit of Nineteen Million, Five Hundred
Thousand United State Dollars (US$19,500,000.00) only in my branch. Upon
maturity several notice was sent to him, even during the war (U.S and Iraqi
war), Five years ago (2003). Again after the war another notification was
sent and still no response came from him. We later found out that Ghazi Musa
Hassan, and his family had been killed during the war in a bomb blast that
hit his home at Mukaradeeb where his personal oil well was:
http://www.iraqmemorialwall.org/iraqicasualties.html

After further investigation it was also discovered that Ghazi Musa Hassan
did not declare any next of kin in his official papers including the paper
work of his bank deposit and he also confided in me the last time he was in
my office that no one except me knew of his deposit in my bank. So, Nine
Million, Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars is still lying in my
bank and no one will ever come forward to claim it. What bothers me most is
that according to the laws of my country at the expiration six {6} years the
funds will revert to the ownership of the Hong Kong Government if nobody
applies to claim the funds. Against this backdrop, my suggestion to you is
that I will like you as a foreigner to stand as the next of kin to Ghazi
Musa Hassan so that you will be able to receive his funds.

MODALITIES:

I want you to know that I have had everything planned out so that we shall
come out successful. I have an attorney that will prepare the necessary
document that will back you up as the next of kin to Ghazi Musa Hassan, all
that is required from you is to provide me with your Full Names and Address
so that the attorney can commence his job. After you have been made the next
of kin, the attorney will also fill in for claims on your behalf and secure
the necessary approval and letter of probate in your favour for the movement
of the funds to an account that will be provided by you. We are going to
adopt a legalized method and the attorney will prepare all the necessary
documents in your favour.

There is a reward for this project and it is a task well worth undertaking.
There is no risk involved at all in this matter, I have evaluated the risks
and the only risk I have here is for you refusing to work with me and
alerting my bank. I am the only one who knows of this situation, good
fortune has blessed you with a name that has planted you into the centre of
relevance in my life. Please endeavour to observe utmost discretion in all
matters concerning this issue. Once the funds have been transferred to your
nominated bank account we shall share in the ratio of 70% for me, 30% for
you but this can be subjected to further negotiations. I send you this mail
not without a measure of fear as to what the consequences, but I know within
me that nothing ventured is nothing gained and that success and riches never
come easy or on a platter of gold. Please observe this instruction
religiously.

Should you be interested please send me your,

1, Full Names,
2, Private Phone Number,
3, Current Residential Address,

And I will prefer you reach me on my private email address below: and
finally after that I shall furnish you with more information's about this
operation. Your earliest response to this letter through my private email
address: (patchna_mail@yahoo.com.hk) will be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Mr.Patrick Chan.

If you simply "scan" the message, you will immediately notice that HongKong is prevalent throughout the content, including the Yahoo.com.hk email addresses that the badguy uses for reference. So, for sure, he has established an email base in HongKong BUT the IP Address in the email header says something quite different although you will see a number of references there to Yahoo.com.hk, the IP address is from a Cable TV operation in Bogota, Columbia South America.

So, either the badguy is in South America, is spoofing the IP address (not a very difficult thing to do) and is really someplace else entirely (logging in from a remote location, though this should have captured the IP address from there as well) or is possibly using a proxy to send the mail out and the real address is being masked by the proxy server or they have a computer hanging directly off the internet that they can configure to be anything they want. I suspect this might be a Nigerian with a satellite connection, however.

The email only contains one IP address so the bottom line is that anyone's guess would be valid about where this character is physically located.

If you never saw a phishing attack before here is the first critical anomaly you should consider.

#1 problem, Content does not match Location.

The email was addressed to the webmaster account on this particular site which is likely to have been "harvested" from the site itself BUT if you examine the content of the email, the badguy never references the recipient by name, a minor point to be sure but annoying nonetheless.

When you get email from a real organization, they greet you by your name in their mails. Their mails start with a salutation that includes your name, like 'Dear Mr. YourName'.

Beware of emails that greet you impersonally, such as 'Dear Friend'. The chances are they are phish mails generated by spammers.

Besides impersonal greetings, phish mails may often contain spelling and grammatical errors that reputed organizations would not make.

If you examine the content of the message, you will discovered that this is truly a 419 scam. It bears ALL the oddities that a classical Spanish Prisoner scam contains, a huge amount of $$$ a seemingly impossible situation that can easily be resolved by throwing a little more $$$ at it, YOURS, of course!

#2 Problem, Fantastic Story Involving $Millions That Can Not Possibly Be Verified.

The greed motivator tripped of by the "get rich quick" scenario with the circumstances using plausible facts that are completely impossible to verify under any circumstances, though certainly the badguys have probably set something up that would allege to confirm the situation like counterfeit government or bank documents from nonexistent officials (almost ALL correspondence in these scams originates from the scammer using different email addresses, all of them from "Free" email accounts like Yahoo and Hotmail.

For example, if you were to challenge some aspect of the "arrangement" an expected response in this case would be for the scammer to tell you that he has a bank official that he bribed in HongKong and next thing you know, you have an "Official" Bank Of China email in your inbox BUT on an official letterhead. The problem is that it came from WangHe@hotmail.com.

#3 Beware of "Official" Documents coming from FREE email accounts.

In this particular scam, they are actually asking you to commit an Identity Theft to get your share of the loot. This is the GREED factor coming into play and doesn't see like a problem but consider this, for example, you are being requested to travel to a foreign country to "impersonate" someone how does not exist to get a pile of $$$ that probably does not exist.

More likely, you get into the Country and find out that you are there illegally and some badguy is demanding that you clean out your bank account and give it to him lest he contact the "authorities" and have you arrested.

#4 Problem. Request includes commission of a crime as a contingency to get the loot. A dead serious NO-NO!

The rest of the story has already been written many times.

The part that "gets me" with these scams is the collusion with the scammers by governments and companies like Yahoo and Western Union who BLATANTLY look the other way when these scams are going down and actually give you are hard time when you try to report them.

I got a really stupid response from Yahoo Abuse just last week for reporting a scammer who tried to register on one of our dating sites and who I discovered was a "full blown" 419 scammer and well known on the net. He had in excess of 20 Yahoo email account that he was actively working to extract as much $$$ as he could from the victims of several dating sites that he registered as an active member. Yahoo sent me an email that they were unable to do anything without an email and the header information. What's up with that? I have had similar responses from Yahoo Abuse in the past, seems like they have a "canned" script or perhaps "tunnel vision" and that is all they know how to do. On the other hand they may likely be just totally overwhelmed and can not do anything else but canned responses!

With that kind of nonsensical abuse support approach, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why Yahoo is the preferred email vehicle of 419 Scammers...

Scammers are everywhere these days and truism "If it looks and feels too good to be true, you can bet that its not!" has never been MORE true!

FireFox revisited... maybe...

A few weeks ago, I completely removed FireFox from my system. I had enough crashes and bogged down performance and felt my whole life was SLOWLY going to get sucked into the the black hole created by the vacuum generated by FireFox as is sucks up all my computer memory. I imagine my whole office including me getting sucked into my flat screen monitor by FireFox like a Gary Larson cartoon.

I have since been "adapting" my work style to use Opera as my default browser. Opera does not have the annoying "feature" to killing all the memory on my system and I have run more than 20 tabs and additional windows without my performance going straight to hell.

Although I have had and been using Opera for quite some time for development and testing purposes, I have never actually made it my default browser. I have to admit that it did take some "getting use to" and I need to make some changes to the way I work but all in all, it has worked out, though I worry about the compatibility issues that I keep hearing about when using it for development. I still run tests on my ancient version of IE to make sure the displays are not too far off (notice that I have not mentioned using IE for doing development work. THAT was even more painful than FireFox!)

Today, I discovered an annoying little tidbit that reminded me how far "out of touch" I have gotten with some of the things going on with the internet EVEN though I work on products that are often perceived as "leading edge" everyday!

I was thinking this morning that I ought to see if I can find a browser tool that I could use to make debugging javascript a little easier so I did a few searches on various topics, one of which was browser comparisons. I got several blog results that did some side by side comparisons of the leading browser competitors.

One of them, a comparison between Netscape 9 and FireFox 2 has a write up about Netscape recommending that their users either install FireFox or Flock. I thought, what the hell is Flock? The article went on to describe the features of Flock including the fact that, like firefox, it was a derivative of Mozilla but had a bunch of "Social Networking" features including a Blogging specific compatibilities etc. etc.

Though the reviews were not all that "glowing" I, naturally, end up on the Flock website to see if that might be something to use to "fill the FireFox hole left on my development machine. On the Flock blog, I discovered that the "Memory Leak" was indeed a topic of discussion and that the engineers at Flock has or would soon fix it.

As you maybe have already guessed, I reluctantly downloaded the Flock browser, reluctantly because the installation package is twice to three times as big as any other browser I have installed, including FireFox!

I can't really report on its performance at this point but I have installed it to see what it does.

Then I found another blog that was very much PRO Opera with a similar FLOCK comparison with some comments about FireFox, mostly BAD except for this one:

Quote:

Ron Paul Supporter Says:

February 15, 2008 at 11:03 am
“The Firefox memory leak is not a bug. It’s a feature! The ‘feature’ is how the pages are cached in a tabbed environment.”

“To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited less than 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last five session history entries for each tab. This is a lot of data. If you have a lot of tabs, Firefox’s memory usage can climb dramatically. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web.”

To disable this feature, type about:config in your url bar, then change - “set browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to ‘0' ”

I hope this solves the problem…

Frankly, I have seen that argument before about the FireFox Memory Leak being a feature and dismissed it as a bunch of marketing balderdash BUT if you notice the last paragraph of the quote, you will see that a suggestion to turn the "Feature" off is recommended! HUH? Turn it off? What's up with that?

I have been railing for what seems now like YEARS on the Mozilla support site and have never been told that you can turn of that "feature" (I still have some problems with that as you might have guessed. It still looks like a marketing ploy to me so that they don't have to FIX the bug). Open to suggestions as I am, I decided to give FireFox another shot to see if that suggestion has substance or is another marketing scam.

I again downloaded the latest and greatest v2.0.0.12 of FireFox, installed it, and fired it up. Sure enough that parameter posted in the recommendation does exist so I disabled it per the instructions. Before, when I ran FireFox on my development system, it only too a few minutes for it to consume 200 megs of memory the way I use it. NOW, it runs similar, if not the same as Opera. Unbelievable! Of course, this is just a test run and probably not very definitive but certainly promising.

However, I can say this, if you are currently running FireFox and its driving you crazy with memory and performance issues, check the parameter "browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers" and set it to '0' (zero) ... it matters!

Enjoy!

Here is yet another HUGE mess brought to you by your "not so friendly" BoonEx & Company, the Distributor of the much hyped, little tested, Dolphin 6 product set ... what a nightmare!

:realmad:

The following was just posted on the BoonEx Expertzzz site:

[Begin Quote]

Dear customers!

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but there was a problem with the save option for admin login in the Dolphin 6.0.0001 patch. To fix this problem please do the following:

1 Create a txt file for example "admin_fix.php".
2 Insert the following code there

<?php
include( "inc/header.inc.php" );
include( "inc/db.inc.php" );
db_res( "TRUNCATE TABLE `Admins`" );
db_res( "INSERT INTO `Admins` (`Name` ,`Password`) VALUES ('admin', MD5( 'dolphin' ))" );
?>

3 Copy and paste this file into Dolphin's root folder
4 Run this file in your favourite browser - for example http://www.yoursite.com/dolphin/admin_fix.php

5. Enter your Admin Panel and change the password to one of yours (difficult to guess pass). Since the file above sets new default password "dolphin".

[End Quote]

And the trend continues ... just plain sloppy! Not a pretty picture, AGAIN!

As if that were not enough, if you didn't know about it, BoonEx has also changed/hosed the licensing on the final release to complicate the installation and operation of the latest release (the same one this bug fix references) not to mention adding new and improved monitoring of your activity while YOU are using THEIR product and callbacks to verify your domain. Can you say Big Brother is BACK? What ever are they thinking?
